Interview with Janene Burton, Ms. Senior USA 2024: A Journey of Service, Style, and Empowerment

As the sun shines through the window, illuminating the room where I had the pleasure of speaking with Janene Burton, a former teacher, public official, and the reigning Ms. Senior USA 2024. Her journey is a tapestry woven with threads of education, public service, and now, a vibrant foray into the world of fashion. During her presence at the prestigious Paris Fashion Week, she answered my questions.

A Legacy of Education

“So now you are a former teacher. What did you teach?” I asked, intrigued by her diverse background.

“I taught history and dance,” Janene replied, a warm smile crossing her face. “I focused on U.S. history and local Utah history. I loved it; I was passionate about teaching secondary education, guiding students aged 12 to 18. And dance was always a part of my life—primarily modern dance. I believe in improvisation, allowing everyone to express themselves.”

Her voice carried a hint of nostalgia, revealing how deeply her roots in education run. “My parents were educators, and my grandfather was the first basketball coach at a college in Utah. Education is a family legacy for us,” she continued. “Growing up, I traveled almost every state in the U.S. with my family during the summers, and that instilled in me a love for exploration.”

The Call to Pageantry

Transitioning from the classroom to the runway might seem unconventional, but for Janene, it felt like a natural progression. “I did a pageant during my time at Utah State University; I was first runner-up to Miss Utah State,” she reminisced. “It was such a fun experience, filled with singing and dancing. But I didn’t see pageantry as my path until recently.”

Her journey into pageantry was sparked by a chance encounter. “I was contacted by Shelley, who encouraged me to take part in this world again. I thought, ‘Why not? It’s been so long, but I have a lot to offer.’”

Janene’s charm and determination shine through as she recounts her past. “I also had the privilege of performing at a Super Bowl after my dance team won nationals. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”

A New Chapter: Serving Through Style

Janene’s service extends beyond education; she has also made her mark in public office. “After teaching for 26 years, I felt a strong calling to serve my community. I ran for city council in Santa Clara, Utah, and I won as a write-in candidate after a challenging campaign,” she explained. “I walked the entire city, knocking on doors and connecting with residents. It was incredible to hear their stories, especially the widows who I resonated with personally.”

Her dual roles as a public official and Ms. Senior USA create a unique synergy. “Both positions allow me to serve in different capacities,” Janene explained. “In pageantry, I can use my platform to advocate for women, especially older women, and bring attention to issues that matter to them.”

Paris Fashion Week: A Message of Empowerment

As she prepares to take on the prestigious Paris Fashion Week, Janene’s mission is clear. “I want to convey to women that we can be beautiful and powerful at any age. This platform allows me to show that age is not a limitation, but an asset. My journey is about stepping into our 1%—the unique potential we all have within us.”

Janene’s voice was infused with passion as she elaborated, “Through my participation in Paris Fashion Week, I want to inspire women to embrace their individuality and express themselves. Fashion is not just about what we wear; it’s a powerful means of self-expression and confidence.”

The Heart of a Mother and Grandmother

Before concluding our conversation, Janene added, “One of my greatest accomplishments is being a mother. I raised four children and now I’m a proud grandmother to ten beautiful grandchildren.” Her eyes sparkled with pride. “I cherish those moments with them, even if one of my daughters lives in North Pole, Alaska. I don’t see her as often, but my heart is always with them.”

As we wrapped up our interview, it was clear that Janene Burton embodies a spirit of resilience and joy. She is not just a titleholder; she is a beacon of empowerment, inspiring women everywhere to step boldly into their own narratives, proving that beauty and service know no age limits.
