A Journey of Resilience and Inspiration: Interview with Nancy deLisle Berhorst, Ms. Super Senior Universe 2024

As I sat down with Nancy deLisle Berhorst, the newly crowned Ms. Super Senior Universe 2024, I was eager to explore her unique journey into the world of pageantry, a path she embarked on later in life, filled with challenges and triumphs.

"Tell me about how you became involved with pageantry," I began, and her eyes sparkled with the delight of memories.

"First of all, I raised all my kids to be in something special," she shared, pride evident in her voice. “They were either skaters during the iconic rivalry of Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding or dancing—one even went to New York as Miss Dance of Michigan. My son became a chef, earning his degree from Le Cordon Bleu. All four of my children have accomplished something remarkable."

Nancy’s foray into pageantry came as a natural progression after nurturing her children's talents. "I was always involved with them, learning how to connect with directors and understand the people around me," she explained. Her career as a caregiver afforded her remarkable encounters with prominent figures, including legends like Yo-Yo Ma and Katharine Hepburn. "I learned that whether someone is famous or not, they are just people—families, emotions, smiles, and tears."

A Serendipitous Start

Her entry into the pageant world was serendipitous. "After moving to Arizona, a patient who thought I was incredible entered me into my first pageant—the Senior America pageant. I sang 'Fascinating Rhythm' accompanied by a piano," Nancy recalled, laughter in her voice. Yet, her debut was met with an unexpected twist. "I was disqualified for having the piano player with me. They didn’t inform me that I was to perform alone!"

Undeterred by this setback, Nancy became deeply ingrained in the pageant community, rising to leadership positions, including president of the Cameo Club from 2001 to 2017. "Every year, I chose different songs, yet I forgot my life philosophy and faced disqualifications," she confessed, reflecting on the challenges she faced.

A Philosophy of Life

Curious about her philosophy, I prompted her to share it. "If I can put God first, live simply, and love unconditionally; if I’m kind, respectful, and forgiving, while still managing to smile, then I will live a long life with integrity," she recited with conviction.

This year marked a pivotal moment for Nancy. "On January 6th, I remembered my philosophy and sang 'Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries.' I received a standing ovation and won the talent portion! When they called my name as the winner, I thought it was for someone else. I needed a little push to walk out—it was surreal!"

Inspiring Others

As Ms. Super Senior Universe, Nancy embodies inspiration. "I’m sharing myself with all the senior ladies globally," she affirmed. "I want them to know it can happen for them too. I’m not getting older; I’m getting better. Each year, I feel a bit more beautiful, energetic, and excited when I share my love with others."

Her participation in events like Paris Fashion Week transcends mere appearances; it's about sharing her gift and showing that joy is accessible to everyone. "Your smile is there because you’re expressing who you are and what’s in your heart. God gave me this gift to share."

Faith as the Cornerstone

Nancy's unwavering faith serves as her foundation. She showed me her necklace adorned with the image of the Blessed Mother. "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee," she recited, embodying her devotion. After serving as president of the Legion of Mary for 20 years, she reflected on her journey. "I believe God redirected me from the Legion to pageants to share my faith with the world."

Looking Ahead with Excitement

The horizon is bright for Nancy, filled with exciting opportunities. "I’ve been invited back to the United Nations for World Women’s Day," she shared, enthusiasm radiating from her. "There’s also a surprise in Mexico City that I can’t wait for. I want to give my heart to those who share my faith."

When I inquired about her life motto, she declared, "I don’t grow old; I grow better."

A Profound Connection

Our conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with warmth. "From our first words on the phone during the Zoom interview, I knew we’d love each other," she said, her eyes shining with genuine affection. We laughed about her promise to learn more French before our next meeting.

As we parted ways, Nancy left me with a deep sense of inspiration, her journey a testament to resilience, faith, and the endless possibilities life offers, no matter the age. "It can happen to you," she reminded me with a radiant smile. "You can do that too. I don’t grow old; I grow better."

Nancy deLisle Berhorst is not just a titleholder; she is a beacon of hope and a living example of embracing life fully, sharing your gifts, and inspiring others along the way.
